Having watched the trailer for series 6 of Doctor Who, I have to say... I'm seriously buzzing!
You really get the feeling that something utterly massive is on the way. There are some seriously heavy quotes in that short clip and the cleverly chosen music really adds to that feeling. It's actually not a Murray Gold composition, it has been borrowed from Two Steps From Hell, a classical group who specialise in making stock music for big budget film trailers; you may remember the "Fire Everything" trailer for the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot... well that was one of their compositions too, a track called Freedom Fighters.
The music for this trailer is saturated with depth and power. To my ears, it sounds like a rich blend of Murray Gold, Narnia and Wagner. It is the perfect musical tantaliser for what you see and what is to come.
There has been much speculation over the appearance of the previous TARDIS interior that features in the clip, some believe it heralds the potential appearance of another Doctor (most of these seem to hope for a bit of 8th Doctor endorsement), personally I'd love that... but I'm content to know it'll be a bit of clever timey-wimey plot narrative.
The spooky clown is very in keeping with Doctor Who of old... playing on the subconscious fears of the audience. All across the country, coulrophobes will be joining children in hiding behind the sofa. In just a few short moments of watching that trailer, you feel like you've been catapulted halfway across the galaxy and back again. It covers a lot of ground but gives away precious little... and leaves you with a desperate appetite for more... a good sign indeed (no matter what the Smith haters say).
The two most powerful moments for me were The Doctor's confrontation with the as yet unknown Mysteronesque entity:
Voice: "Fear me... I've killed hundred's of Time Lords."
The Doctor: ""Fear me... I've killed all of them."
Do witty comebacks get any darker or more epic than that? I don't think so!
The second big bit for me was the Doctor's statement that all his life he'd been running... and now it was time for him to stop. Again I can't help wondering if there is a reason that resonates with me so strongly on a personal level.
Being Lent I couldn't help but let my mind wander to the most epic confrontation there's ever been and I indulged my imagination by warping the Doctor's comeback and applying it to another setting where two other adversaries locked horns:
Satan: "Fear me... I've killed millions of sinners."
Jesus: "Fear me... I've killed sin."

The forthcoming series of Doctor Who looks like it is going to be an immense one and quite a journey, not just for the characters...
We got to finally find out who River Song is too.
